Marion Barbara ‘Joe’ Carstairs served in France as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross aged 16. She lived openly as a lesbian and dressed as a man. She was also known for having numerous affairs with famous women of the time, this included Dolly Wilde who was also an ambulance driver and niece of Oscar Wilde.
Marion or ‘Joe’ was also a famous speed boat racer, known as the fastest women on water! She was also the heiress to Standard Oil.
Marion was years in front of her time and lived life gregariously.
