Corporal Ernest Gregory

Role: Stretcher-bearer

Ernest Gregory was a Sheffield-born conscientious objector who joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as a stretcher-bearer. Although refusing to bear arms Gregory was awarded various medals for bravery. During the Battle of Passchendaele Gregory won the Military Medal. His citation reads ‘Pte Gregory of the 1/3rd West Riding Field Ambulance RAMC was awarded his medal for conspicuous bravery in the field for bringing wounded men in terrible conditions-under fire and through shell holes and mud-filled water up to the armpits’.

Gregory was later the victim of a gas attack, the effects of which lasted with him until his death in 1976.
