Muriel Thompson

Role: Driver for the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY)

A proficient racing driver and committed suffragist, Muriel Thompson was a driver for the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) which she joined in January 1915. Roles included a requirement to perform mechanical maintenance tasks on the vehicles. In 1916 she was second in command to Lilian Franklin on the first expedition in support of the British Army.

Throughout her time in the FANY Muriel Thompson was awarded multiple medals such as the Knights Cross of the Order of Leopold II, given to her by King Albert  for her evacuation of wounded Belgian soldiers whilst coming under heavy fire. Thompson was also awarded the Military Medal and the Croix de Guerre for courage under fire while moving the injured in the middle of a bombing campaign in May 1918.
