London’s first female firefighter was Sue Batten who joined London Fire Brigade in 1982. Around 60 other women joined in the 1980s.
Sue Batten was 30 when she joined the London Fire Brigade and became Britain’s first woman firefighter in 1982. She said at the time: “It was tough and often lonely. The worst thing possibly was that I was a woman on my own. There were a lot of things I missed out on, just general chit chat.” Sue retired on the 28th September 2007 after 25 years of service.
