Role: Hector Munro’s Flying Ambulance Corps
Elsie Knocker, later Baroness de T’Serclaes served alongside Mairi Chisholm, was one of the most photographed women of the First World War. Together with friend Mairi Chisholm Elsie won numerous medals for bravery.
Elsie was chosen to join Hector Munro’s Flying Ambulance Corps as an ambulance driver during World War One. She was a skilled mechanic and driver and spoke German and French.
Self-funded and determined, both Elsie and Mairi set up their own first aid post only 100 yards from the front. After almost four years, Mairi and Elsie had saved many lives.
Elsie, along with Mairi, also photographed much of the War. Their photographs are now famous, allowing us an insight into the horrors of the frontline and the determination of these women.
